EXPLORE WITH ART“S”

Hotel S Macau originates from SUN SUN Hotel, a historic building constructed in 1949. It is located at Praça de Ponte e Horta (Sidakou, also known as Sai Dat Hau), the core landing site of Portuguese settlers in Macau and the most prosperous commercial hub of the Inner Harbour in old times.

Bordering Berths 14 and 16 of the Inner Harbour, Sidakou served as a major anchorage for Portuguese merchant ships and cargo boats in early years. The area was lined with wharf logistics firms, foreign trading houses and local shops, forming Macau’s liveliest district for Portuguese residents and merchants. A gentle uphill stroll leads through a complete cluster of World Heritage Sites. Within several minutes’ walk lie Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro and Rua da Felicidade; further uphill are Largo do Lilau and Mandarin’s House. Along the route stand century-old iconic churches including St. Lawrence’s Church, St. Joseph’s Seminary Church, St. Dominic’s Church and the Ruins of St. Paul, forming an integrated Sino-Western cultural tourism route across Macau’s Historic Centre. Surrounded by ancient docks, traditional residences, churches and shopping streets, this location holds irreplaceable historical value.

The hotel also boasts world-famous Hollywood cinematic heritage. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the iconic 1984 adventure blockbuster directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Harrison Ford, shot its legendary opening escape scene at the "Club Obi-Wan" nightclub inside the original Hsin Hsin Hotel. The plot follows Indiana Jones negotiating with gangsters at the club before jumping off the building and fleeing through old Inner Harbour alleys. All indoor nightclub scenes, exterior shots at Praça de Ponte e Horta and street chase sequences were filmed on location here. It was the first A-list Hollywood blockbuster to shoot on location in Macau, making this venue a world-famous pilgrimage spot for movie fans. The building was reconstructed into a 15-storey tower in 1990 and officially reopened in 1994. Rebranded as Hotel S Macau in 2017, it underwent a full artistic renovation in 2022. Differentiated from integrated casino resorts in Taipa, the hotel centres its brand positioning on old-town revitalisation and immersive contemporary art hospitality, crafting exclusive stays for art enthusiasts, cultural deep travellers and creative industry practitioners.

The renovation project was supervised by an international design collective. A custom giant mural created by a globally renowned street artist decorates the exterior facade. Original masterpieces by world-class artists including Yayoi Kusama, Yoshitomo Nara, Takashi Murakami, Andy Warhol and Yue Minjun are permanently displayed across the lobby, lift lobbies and all floor corridors. Each level features themed galleries covering childhood, ecology, literature and street art. The hotel continuously collaborates with emerging local Hong Kong and Macau artists to host limited exhibitions and pop-up art events. It achieves in-depth integration of old-town heritage preservation, international contemporary art and hospitality services, allowing guests to wander a miniature art museum without stepping out of the hotel.
